I’m very excited about the prospect of our new “Farm Gate” shop which will open to the public soon. One of the things I want to do with this project is create a “Food Hub”. This means our little shed will become a centre for all the different food vans that drive around the country and we can actively sell food from other small producers around the country and vice versa.
I think it’s got the potential to be a great system, to set up a network of Food Hubs that transport between them, a service which individually none of us could afford to pay for, but collectively we can justify it and piggy back on whatever food is being moved about.
The other benefit is that local people in each different region have access to a greater variety of good products that are not necessarily available in their area, such as dairy products in Perthshire for example. Using the Food Hub system, customers can then pick up these products when they come in to us for eggs, meat etc and it still remains economically viable for the producers.
